Ride Re-Caps

28 March 2009, The Richmond County Veterans Ride.  The day started overcast, it had rained dogs and cats and more cats the night before. The Rockingham VFW hosted the event with sausage and cheese biscuit for breakfast with all the coffee you belly could hold for donation.  The Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of troop 49 help out by raising the flag and giving the pledge of allegiance.  Ms Tina blessed the group and off we went to Cheraw, Society Hill and Darlington.  We stop in Society Hill to check out the veteran’s monument and dawn our second card.  We by-passed our fuel and headed onto Darlington Speedway to tour the museum and dawn our third card.  The skies started to look pretty good by the time we reached the Raceway and the tour was good as always.  We left Darlington, backtracked back to Society Hill on the US 401 and road on in to Clio, where we stopped at American Legion Post 60.  Members of post 60 meet us with cold soda and beer and showed us around, all while the sky began to drip ever so slowly.  We beat feet on our way to McColl for a gas stop.  By then the rain was really coming down.  With only 30 miles to go and the BBQ being served back at the VFW, we made a command decision to head for home.  Upon arrival back at the VFW, my bike was washed and clean and just needed to be dried off, like me.  A good ride, about 115 miles long, 24 riders and good food, 2 great bands (Dixie Ambush and saddle Creek) and lot of goodies to give away.

1/24/ 2009 Rora, Helen, Al, Paul, Tina, Caressa and Uncle Marty headed off to the Easy Riders show from Rockingham.  All but Marty, Tina and Caressa road a extra 30 miles down from Aberdeen first.  We left at 0900 and heade west to Wadesbore for chow at Macs anytime.  Still west on the US-74 towards Charlotte for about 75 mile to the convention center.  The show was good and after buying them out of patches and leather we headed home. On the way home we took the NC-27 east to Abermereal and stop a the local fish house for dinner.  From they I went south on the NC-52 back to Wadesbore and home, while the Aberdeen group kept heading east on the 27.  All together the ride was well over 200 miles with penty of stops.  We look forward to next year.

11/11 2008 Rora, Ronnie and Marty head to Pinehurst.  The boys head off to the Veteran's Day Service in Pinehurst this last Tuesday at 1100 in the Pinehurst Park.  The Commanding General of the 82nd Airborne was the guest speaker and the VFW provided the snacks afterwards.  You could not swing a dead cat without hitting a retired one or two star that day.  Nice ride along the golf courses. Well Done, a must see for next year.

11/2 2008  Rora's and Marty's big adventure for chow.  Rora and I made our way up to the Spring lake post this last Sunday for their "All you can Eat Breakfast for $5"  What a deal, if you can think of it, they have it.  The crew up there bent ovet backwards to make our stay a great time and the food was very good.  The ride was good also.  We took the US 1 from Aberdeen up to the Vass exit and cut across to Spring Lake.  the roads were two lane and the leave were in full color.  All together we road about 120 miles.  A very good day.  hats off to Spring Lake American Legion.

10/3-10/5 2008 "The Virginia Beach Fall Romp".  Ms Tina and I began Friday morning with our ride up to Norfolk starting out at 0900.  We took the US-1 to the I-40 East to the US-64 and I-95 North.  Once we crossed in to Virginia we went east on the US-58 on into Norfolk.  The mileage up to Norfolk was about 280 miles or so.  We took our time and the ride took about 6 hours with stops for lunch and gas about every hour and 15 or so.  We met other ALR riders from Virginia and Maryland that afternoon at the Virginia Beach Resort and rode over to Knuckle Heads Road House for dinner, good chow.  We had an old friend of my from Kitty Hawk?CVW-11 days meet us there for dinner with about 12 other riders from the VA/MD ALR.  The next morning the others took a ride down to the North Carolina border and back, had a late lunch at Knuckle Heads and headed on down to Virginia Beach to an old out laying field now Aviation museum complete with grass runways that was used during WW II.  There were about 20 aircraft from WW II on display and chow was catered by Bubba’s BBQ.  At about 1930 the program started with introductions of some returning VETS form Iraq and then the Charlie Daniels Band played some of the greatest music known to man.  The selection included all of their old tunes and some of their new stuff.  The concert end about 2130 and a nice 30 minute ride got us back to my Daughter's home up in Norfolk.  On Sunday we left Norfolk on our return trip coming back the same route as we took up arriving home in Rockingham about 1530.  The weather was great, the people wonderful and the weekend a super time. All and all Ms Tina and I put about 850 miles on the old FatBoy this weekend, Monkey Butt for all my Friends. LOL

9/20 2008 "The 2nd Annual "Toy for Tots Ride".  The ride started at Aberdeen Post 72 and went west on NC-5 through the golf capital of the world in Pinehurst to the 211, From there west on NC-211 to the NC-705, the Pottery Hwy north to NC-24/27 to the Southern Pines VFW Post.  Bcak south onthe US-1 to Hoffman to the BP gas station to fill up and west on Caddell Rd to Millstone to Ledbetter, past the Rockingham Legion.  South on Richmond Rd ext to the US-1 and through down town Rockingham to the Rockingham VFW.  From there east on Airport Rd to NC-177 to Hamlet and south to US-74 Bus and east to the Hamlet Legion.  Back west to the NC-177 to north to the Rockingham Speedway with a small stop to see the names on "the rock". North again on the US-1 to Aberdeen and home.  The ride was about 110 miles long with stops at four Legion and VFW posts.  Breakfast was provide by the "Ladies AUX of Post 72" and lunch by the "Pinehurst Elementary School Reindeer Shop" (Karen and Crew) with about 40 plus riders and chow hounds.  WE will keep collecting toys until 2 December and passing them along to "Toys for Tots".Great Job by one and all.
